Show Review The Pitt (HBO)

Rating: 5/10 Stars. Woke Nonsense: 80% of Show

This is a medical drama show, which is manages actual differentiation from the 20,000 such you have already seen. This genre debuted in 1951, the show City Hospital, and has had dozens of imitators. So the creators needed a new hook. In the Pitt, set in an emergency room in a tough neighborhood in Pittsburgh, each episode is one hour of a very busy day. (Remember 24, anyone? This would be an homage to that show).

The show stars Noah Wyle, who has had lots of practice being a doctor in the ER. Having starred for 11 years in the show of that name, back in the late 90’s. Hes a very good actor, and he does a nice turn in this show.

In the Pitt, it seems like Wyle is the only actual certified doctor. Every other medical practitioner is an intern of varying experience. There are several (None of whom you have ever heard of as actors) for whom this is the very first day on the job at this ER, or their first day as an intern anywhere.

Unlike every other medical drama you have seen, there does not appear to be any budding romances. Everyone is too busy tending to the rapid onslought of emergency patients, many of whom may die immediately without Wy-lie Coyote, super genius level medical care. (Where is Dr. House when you need him?)

In the first season, there is much drama, tragic deaths of patients, assaults on a nurse by a cranky patient, and be warned, you will see the innards of many of the patients. Not for the queasy, mind you. If you don’t like seeing blood and guts, best turn away during those moments. There are many such.

For the most part, I enjoyed the show. The action is non stop, the acting good to fantastic. I particularly liked Katherine LaNasa, she is terrific. The show has a big, ensemble cast, and you will not know any of the actors so I am not going through the tedium of naming them all. Kudos to Tracy Ifeachor, Fiona Dourif, and Garren Howell for particularly memorable performances.

If you are not necessarily a supporter of the relentlessly in your face woke nature of most of the entertainment fare produced out of hollywood these days, you will find many of the storylines off putting. Just as an example, not all of the white guys in the show are jerks. However, ALL of the jerks are white guys. An underage girl comes to the ER for an abortion pill, which would be illegal in this case because she is past the legal age for an abortion. Also, her mother objects so she can’t get the pill she wants. The staff convinces the mother that the daughter will hate her for preventing the abortion. Wyle is a HERO for illegally providing the pill. No one tries to make the case for having the baby and putting it up for adoption. No one is concerned with openly breaking the law.

In the second season, dozens of patients from a music concert are shot up by someone with an AR15. (Those awful 2nd amendment supporters!) Two gay guys show up with a pregnant surrogate mother. Wyle reveals himself to be an atheist, while an intern is trying to comfort him with some Christian references. (The industry HATES Christians). A boy arrives with the measles, which he has because his parents are two of those awful anti vaxxers (probably MAGA voters!). He may die.

I am almost certain there will be a story arc concerning highly sympathetic illegal aliens, who have been brutalized by ICE agents. Children harmed by tear gas at anti Ice protests. (I am only 4 episodes into season 2 so far). Other likely story lines, I am guessing: Racist white guy not wanting to treated by the black doctor; abused wife or daughter raped by white dad. Trans “woman” who has been beaten up in prison by tranphobic white supremicists. White doctor not willing to give a child hormone drugs or cut off body parts. There are literally dozens of options here!

Maybe I should apply to be a writer on the show?

Anyways, if there was any political balance at all in the story arcs, or it was not SO obnoxiously woke, I could have given the show an 8 or 9. But I do tire of the wokeness that pervades almost everything coming out of Hollywood, it just gets SO overbearing. But if you like all those story lines, you will have no reservations and love the show. Remember those with weak stomaches; I warned you about the visible intestines.

Show Recommendation: 24. The grand daddy of high adrenaline, action rich shows. Not a medical drama, but a spy themed show. Unlike todays narratives, the bad guys are generally NOT cops, FBI agents, or other American civil servants. But Russian and chinese spies, Arab terrorists, etc. (These might be heroes in the reboot.) Highly recommend it.

A reminder of my favorite GUY action TV Series ever.

  1. Thanks for the review.   Not my cup of tea but I did really like both Scrubs for a laugh and House for good acting. I had missed your earlier list of man show recommendations.   One of my retirement goals is to find quality TV.    Dave
