Mission Impossible (and Improbable) 8 Movie Review. 9 of 10 Stars.

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt Doing awesome stunt

Woke Nonsense: none really

I loved this movie. Its totally a guy thing. The action is nonstop, with sustained suspense throughout. And whoa! The stunts. The stunts are the stars of the show. The actors, well Cruise does great stunts.

It is true that the storyline is beyond ludicrous. You can be sure that, this being a Mission Impossible movie, that the end of the world is threatened in a few days. This of course adds to the urgency and the tempo of the action. In a good way. But you will find yourself thinking, I have seen Hallmark Christmas movies with more plausible plotlines. Wait, no I haven’t. I don’t watch any of those-honest!

But why worry about realism, when you have ignored it constantly in in all your favorite action movies. Watching Lord of the Rings (magical jewelery,1000 inept Orc soldiers killed by a senior citizen with a stick), Bond Movies, (Mega babes jump into the sack at his smile, British civil servants stay at the Ritz and drive Astin Martins), Game of Thrones, (Dragons, Ice Zombies, etc). So let loose of your skepticism. Don’t be surprised, the storyline is dumb. Ignore that and you will love the movie.

Why did I love the movie? Honestly, there is an underwater scene in a Russian Submarine that is one of the most creative, suspense filled, entertaining stunts I have ever seen. And that is just one of a dozen great stunts, each as impossible (thats the mission remember) as the next. But none the less entertaining for all of that. Think Indiana Jones’s best stunts for almost three hours.

For those concerned with the acting, the actors, etc the best that can be said is that each delivers their ernest and predictable lines in wooden yet workmanlike fashion. Sometimes the technical references are incomprehensible or silly. Remember, you are not here for snappy dialog, but to see the world saved by Ethan Hunt one last time. If you want erudite and witty dialog, check out one of the thousand Jane Austin movies or their innumerable remakes and mini series treatments.

BTW can we all raise a cheer for Tom Cruise. He has made so many movies that entertained me, I can’t really think of all of them. Hearken back to Risky Business. Great movie. He does a great job as a typical soft coddled suburban college senior. He has major but typical ambitions- sex and entrance to Princeton. Totally convincing. Watch it.

Shockingly, he also spares us from hearing his opinions on politics. Great actor, making good to great movies, no far left blathering. Practically a miracle! Think Clint Eastwood. (Of course he has made some clunkers, but he is almost always the best part of those). The word is that his also is a fantastic guy. Kind and considerate. He does his OWN stunts!

We know Cruise has not made the last Top Gun movie, so we have that to look forward to. The world will be saved, hopefully Jennifer Connelly will be around to pour drinks and serve as his love interest. Then who knows? Risky Business Part Deux?

We want Jennifer Back in Top Gun 3

NOOO! Not the souless Kelly McGillis. She is way past her prime and sucked in the first one anyway.

Recommendation: Watch all the Mission Impossible movies. Top Gun. Risky Business. Top Gun Maverick. The Edge of Tomorrow. Minority Report (prescient flick). Almost any other Cruise flick. Pass on: Legend, The Mummy- Cruise version, (the Original is GREAT!), Born on the 4th of July, and Rock of Ages.

Thanks for everything, Tom.
