Movie Review Conclave 6/10 Stars

Woke Nonsense: Almost none

This movie is a Who Dunnit, without a murder. The only deaths are potentially those of the ambitions of three prominent cardinals, who hope to become Pope upon the death of the incumbent.

The movie boasts an impressive cast, each of whom delivers an impressive performance. Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow star.

The movie starts with the announcement of the death of the Pope, apparently a much revered figure. Ralph Fiennes, as the Popes right hand man, has the role of directing the election of the new Pope. Cardinals from around the world are summoned to Rome, their meetings are called a conclave. You know, the white or black smoke event.

There are three high profile Cardinals, who would be the odds on favorite to be annointed by the Cards (or God thru the Cards). Early on it becomes apparent that they each may have some deficiency, some question, about their suitability. Skeletons in their closets, as it were. These scandals are revealed slowly, (too slowly) and it is clear that someone is orchstrating the outing of these unworthies. But who? This is the mystery.

Fiennes, as Lawrence, is portayed as completely holy and moral as the honest broker for the election of the Pope. We are introduced to the key nominees, and then to the revelation of their inherent flaws.

Into this combustible suspense drama is dropped a mystery Deacon from no where, who the dead pope had elevated to the rank of Cardinal without anyone knowing it. This is Antonio Toma, as recently anointed Guerini. He shows up and starts impressing people with his reverance and piety.

In any case, the plot twist is a good one and I will not be the spoiler here. The acting is great, and the mystery and drama in an unusual setting (no inspector Clouseaus or Sherlock Holmes characters on the case). Just Lawrence, sans magnifying glass or apparent detective skills, with help from Tucci.

I give this an average rating, because it is slow moving. Otherwise definitely worth the watch, even for $20 at the theaters. But you can watch it at home, likely for nothing or a few bucks. Enjoy the performances of pro actors.
